In The Black
Sam Duff 1981 (Michigan)
In the Black
Shadow flickers
in the corner of my eyes
Did I see it?
I’m not sure this time
Pressure at my temples
Pounding
As I’m sat across from you
I wonder who your talking to
I never hear the words you say
Every breath was thrown away
I’m never going out again
I have shut the door for good
Certain I saw
Certain, I’d thought
Crack run across the wall
Like a lurking spider, fast
Eyes flick about, scanning
Lost
I have shed so many skins
Gaunt and pale and translucent
no masks left to hide behind
But I am just as blank inside
Stuck in this until the end
only truth I’ve known has been
the pain
I dance,
arms pinwheeling
The shadows swirl
Nipping at my heels
The horrors grin and grab
Their red eyes glare
The wall bursts
And I dance with the spiders
Down there
This one is no longer good
Left to rot and so it did
It moves about as if alive
Don’t be fooled
It’s dead inside
I was never one of you
fear and anger only ruled
Wished I were someone else
The Only thing I’ve ever felt was hate
Round and round
Mouth frothing
Red eyed
Dancing
Flailing
Tumbling
Even if we shared a room
No one would be there with you
I no longer have to hide
this husk is all I left behind
You don’t see if you don’t care
Just like me; There’s no one there
Never speak a word again
Pray with me now For the end
of hate
and pain
I am not real
And You are not here
Let me not know
Let me not feel
But red eyes float in the black
Staring their scorn right back
Laughing, laughing
something really nasty is near
Right here, where I used to be
Laughing
Laughing
