Delilah

Sophia Onyekachi Ordu 1999 (Port Harcourt Rivers State)

                     DELILAH
A child  was born with more strength than a lion
Blessed to free his home; a million enemies he got for free
They did turn his wife on him for seven days, only to burn
Her. But they earned an angry jawbone instead, a fee
I fear they duly deserved.

A man he became, feared by a thousand souls
And more envy upon his neck he did receive
When he alas fell in love by the valley of soreks
They whispered to the gullible ears of his love
"Thou wilt take the bread or burn like a bird?"

Tell me the secret of your strength she pressed on each day
Although she seduced him to his fall but wished he would not tell
Sadly each passing day of failure brought her closer to the day
She would face an old fate if she could not put him under her spell
"Will it be you or him? You decide!"

With a heavy heart she did announce the unfortunate secret
That wickedly slew the strength of the one she loved
As they drew the sword that gave them power but burned her heart
She used her life to get what the strength of men a thousand
Could never attain even if they tried.

Only if you would travel back in time like I did
And gaze upon the evil men did conceit in minds so vile
You would curse less at her and perhaps her deed
You never saw the crimson eyes behind delilah's veil
You decide...

About this poem

The poem tells the tragic story of Samson and Delilah in the bible. It looks at their relationship from a different angle and hope to make readers see the possibility of Delilah plight rather than always condemn her. In the world we live in today, when the name "Delilah" is mentioned people always mark it with negative thoughts despite not being sure of the accuracy of the story. So while trying to entertain readers I hope to educate them to always try to look at things from a separate angle, not always the preordained path which the grew to know. ... However it is their choice to believe what they want to.
