Daughter of Mine

Peter Zelinsky 1953 (Monroeville)

April 23

From the moment those big green eyes looked deep into mine,
I knew my heart was captured, yours for all time.
My arms and legs for the avenues and streets,
As little cars roamed to the cies of beep-beep.

You sat in my lap and we played for awhile.
I still hear your giggles and it brings me a smile.
The years flew by as I watched you grow,
teaching you what you need to know.

I may not always have done it right,
or you failed to understand. try as I might.
I wanted to give you all that I had,
But sometimes we'd argue and I'd make you mad.

You've grown to a woman, too fast it seems.
The thought of you leaving, for me, it means
long nights of sleeping without any rest.
It's time for the little bird to leave it's nest.

My daughter of flesh you may never be,
but of heart and mind you belong to me.
I'll still worry and fret, my thoughts awhirl.
After all, your still my baby girl.

I hope you realize what I've tried to say,
being a parent is difficult, there's no easy way.
But I wouldn't trade a moment of our time together,
You are my daughter, I am your father, forever.
