Color Blind
Phillip L Moore 1968 (New York, NY)
When you're blind to my
color there are things
that you fail to see.
You're blind to the fact
that the way some people act
towards my color is the prime
example of hatred and bigotry.
You're blind to the fact
That my people have been attacked,
Lives taken in the name of White Supremacy.
There are people who think
they have superiority because
Their skin is lighter than mine.
Maybe the lack of melanin in your skin
Makes you delusional and puts you in
A Racist state of mind.
Did that happen by accident
Or, was it purposely designed?
Our forgiving nature keeps us
From responding to you in kind.
But forgiving so many atrocities
Puts us in a slave mentality
So in my own mind
I become color blind
And that can lead to insanity.
Start seeing me as a human being
And stop seeing me as a commodity.
I am not to be used, abused, and
thrown away so casually.
When you are blind to my color
You are blind to my humanity.
About this poem
when you use the term color blind, you see everything in shades of gray missing the details of color that exist every day.
