But Loving You Was Harder

The actual “falling in love” part of being in love isn’t hard.
It was easy to fall for you.
But after I fell, I was stuck.
I found myself clawing at the walls of the hole I’d dig myself into.
But nothing ever changed.

With every fight and hateful word,
I wanted nothing more than a life
like I’d had before we met.
But with every “I love you” I realized,
I could never live like that again.

I needed you.
I needed the way you worshiped my every inch.
Because finally,
You saw me like no one else had.
You saw me how I wished
I could see myself.

If I’d been told one day you wouldn’t be here,
I would have laughed.
Yet, here I am.
Alone.
Alone, but not lonely.

Yes, the “falling out of love” part of being in love is hard
But loving you was harder.

About this poem

I found myself losing sight of who I was trying to maintain a relationship that was impossible. I, as many others have, had gone to great lengths to keep this person in my life, and I realized they weren’t worth losing myself over.
