Dead Tired. Two A M.

He was sleeping

Stretched flat

On a a customer bench

By a table

At McDonalds.

Before him empty coffee cup

Muffin wrappings.

Economy copy of black Bible.

The HOLY BIBLE.

What was the story here.

I dare not wake him.

Homeless?

Student cramming late nighter?

Lonely and just plain

Needing the happy, silly

Sounds of Friday night

Youth around.

And there they were

Joking, storytelling, flirting.

Flexing what they got.

He just slept.

That Bible got me thinking.

I had been re-reading a Steinbeck

Novella…The Red Pony.

Bunch of them were personal

Favourites

I made some notes on the

Back inside jacket.

Words of encouragement.

Citing Psalms 37, 84 and 91.

Quietly I placed the

Personalized novella

On top of his Bible.

I left. No other direct contact.

He was dead to the world.

Who knows?
