Hold On
Michael W. Evans 1970 (US)
Who is this monster that lives in the shadows? Why don't I see him causing so much pain and destruction. Has he always been there, looking back at me through the mirror. Have I lived with him my whole life and never seen him. Why is it that he only rears his ugly head at those he's supposed love most. I've not ever seen this beast clearly, only heard of his rage. How terrified I am of seeing him. Where does he go when there is no love before him to devour, chew-up, then spit out-- like a blood thirsty lion that kills, because it can. How can a monster hidden be destroyed. I feel lost, maybe I'm running-- from what? I don't know or maybe I do and fear to see. Finding his secret hiding place, somewhere deep in the shadows of my mind. He's devastated so many, what might he do to me. I must be the hero! Save myself from this evil. I desperately want to be loved, at what cost-- Do I even know?
How can I fight what I can't even see?
If I can believe by faith then I can fight by faith. The monster hasn't destroyed God. There is still hope, there is always hope. I just need to hold on.

About this poem
It was a dark time. Describing it seem to shine some light of hope onto a desperate heart.
