Turning Leaves

Michael Durham 1945 (Indianapolis IN)

March 23

In this moment, I am here!  eyes wide open - kicking, screaming, gasping for air, angry that the departed womb provides no more comfort or room.

And then, I find me!  I am free - scintillating, strong, new senses, that belong to My being... youth quickly passes to a world of possibilities.

I see the leaves, stretching out, growing, pointing the way, stimulated by the warmth of a new day, providing energy and air that come from the rays of a new sun.

But then, an unexpected path - a seed fallen has taken root, a new tree, the sapling takes shape using the shadow's embrace.  could it be another me?  my heart races for my son!

Laughing, crying, playing, learning, together we grow with a similar yearning - today's surprise, tomorrow's sunrise, not enough time, cherish each moment, that is prime!

Then, the cool north days appear, giving rise to the sunglows demise, coloring leaves, robbing energy and air that once was plenty, baring branches, and moving sap to its source, of course.

But then, an unexpected joy - a boy, how grand!  Wrinkly skin and what a grin, I see my son!  more time is needed as the cycle goes, there is little light and the winds more fervently blow.

At last, fulfilled, I prepare my song, and thrilled to have made all plans done, for now, memories stored, once more, brown branches bare, no more leaves to turn

About this poem

The poem was written late in my life after I realized time was passing quickly and my famility was growing fast. It expresses my joy in observing the progression and sadness in knowing the reality of the conclusion.
