Hair

Their first day of school didn't go so well.
She said he had a funny smile so he pulled her hair.
But most every day since then they were side by side.
From pattycakes to weekend dates with hard goodbyes

With her wedding night legs wrapped around him, he grabbed her hair.
With both hands, he breathed it in and said
"I could die right here"
She said, " but then you wouldn't get to see our babies grow, or theirs.
I hope they get your funny smile"
He said, "I hope they get your hair"

As she rocked their first grand baby,
he swept up her hair,
put away the pills, asked the nurse to wait downstairs.
As she looked down in tomorrows eyes, she said
"I could die right here."
Their last day together didn't go so well.
