fireflies

Viviana Quiroz Ruiz 2007 (United States)

You say my eyes are like starlight
Underneath the moonlit night
Yet I say in your eyes
I see billions of fireflies
Lighting up the dark forest
That my heart has been for years

Your smile is a match
That lights a small candle
It creates a fire warm enough to feel
But not hot enough to burn

I've always hated love songs
probably because before you
All the world had done was break my heart

My heart wasn't broken as you would think
It was never shattered all at once
It was chipped piece by peace
Every piece still there yet scattered

Possibly because I’d never found
Meaning in the words
But with you, it's all different
Every word of every love song is about you

“I love you” was overused but means so much now
I love you with every cell in my body
I love you unconditionally
I love you forever
I love you more than those bad days ahead of us

I love you to the moon and back
Meaning I love you every heartbeat
Therefore I love you every zeptosecond

Those fireflies in your eyes
When I look at them
Turn into butterflies
The same butterflies that burst into fireworks
Every touch
Every kiss
Every word which you speak

I love you for better and worse
I love you forever
For putting me back together
With a kiss light as a feather

About this poem

I wrote this poem because before my current boyfriend i went through a really bad heartbreak and a few small ones and i was never really able to feel loved or enjoy love songs after that and when i met my boyfriend we became friends instantly and he treated me really well and helped me in my process of healing and i turned these feelings into a poem.
