A Moment on Oak Hill Way”

Cool crisp autumn evening.
Dry leaves smunch underfoot.
Squirrels scruffling up bark and limb.
My exhaling warm breath rubs cheek and evaporates.
Pause.
Look about.
Gently purse the corners of my upturned lips.
Try to capture the moment.
Shake head.
Sigh.
Shrug.
Smile again.
Look back.
Keep walking.

About this poem

As I, a second year American graduate student at the London School of Economics, was departing the Hampstead Heath, a large public commons (park) on a beautiful autumn evening on a footpath exiting the Heath, this drivel of a poem or ditty popped into my mind. I hastened to a friends place a couple of blocks over and scratched out these random thoughts on paper. After a couple of minor edits, I finalized this poem.
