Devour

Branches cracked underfoot, wind howled from above like a wounded beast. Barely still, coving the sound of grumblings from an empty stomach. A small flutter in the distance, I steadied my stance and aimed. For a moment, the world stood still. A felt eternity, joined by all living things and the spirits of the dead. Blood pooled on the ground like bubbling lava. I hadn’t seen the creature lurking above in the tree. My last thought: so be it. I hunger no more. Take it now, the hunger is yours.

About this poem

Consumption is required to sustain life. Any attempt to ignore this basic fact is met with great suffering. Yet we tire of the constant pressure to perform, produce, and procure. The world spins itself into an every greater calamity of greed and lust. What we take we must give back. As we devour, so shall we be devoured.
