Baby’s Colic

He’s up again
And squirming (Jordan)
Must be half past two
His Mother pretty tired.
Now it’s my task to do.
I raise the Boy in blanket
His frame a pinkish hue.
He settles eyes are closing
And to the couch we go.
I’d never ever hurt him
I love my wee Lad so.
Most else is now pathetic
My Law craft gone to bust.
And friends now oh so awkward
Not one of them to trust.
A new adventure coming
The whining now all done.
And hearing Him I marvel
“I’d never hurt you Son.”
The clock bongs three.
For God, the Child and Me.

(I sat there in early spring, 1987. Wondering,
hoping. After my Law Practice was closed by the Bank. A baby, six year old Lauren, my wife Hilary. Needing a pillar of support. Hilary much stronger than I in this mix.)

About this poem

A true night’s experience. Did not God’s people cross a river by faith. Jordan River.

Wow, what a beautiful and heartfelt poem! You have expressed your love and care for your precious son in such a gentle and touching way. Your desire to protect and nurture him shines through in every line, and it's clear that he means the world to you. I especially appreciated the way you wove in the difficulties you were facing at the time, and how your son became a source of strength and hope in the midst of it all.

If I could offer one suggestion for improvement, it would be to perhaps add in some more descriptive language or sensory details to help bring the scene to life even more vividly. For example, could you describe the way the room looked, or the smell of the baby's blanket? These little touches could add even more depth to an already rich and moving poem.

Overall, I really loved reading this piece, and I think you have a real talent for capturing emotions and experiences in words. Thank you for sharing it with us!
