I thought I realised

In youth, I thought I loved you,
But in adulthood discovered I needed something new.
For, though you were kind,
You once said, 'it is easy for me to convince myself you have changed your mind.'

And though I believed you would never do anything to hurt me,
I realized far too late how everything 'kind' came with a fee;
What do I mean by 'kind'?
Clearly, you would do the bare minimum, and I was too blind.

There was nothing you liked about me being seventeen;
Childish, naive - but I was so keen.
Perhaps what you liked was how I was past the age of sixteen,
For it is easier to get what you want from a girl who believed she was born to be seen.
