Did the Gods Send You?

Ascended from the heavens,
Below the sky and the stars above the rest of us,
Crowns of gold and silver thorns pierce their foreheads,
Drowning them in thick, sweet ichor.
Ethereal dancers worship, light on their feet,
Feasts of starlight and moonbeams
Grace the lips of those who see them.
Heaven and Hell couldn’t keep them;
I wonder if Earth can do what other realms could not?
Jekyll and Hyde, an angel’s innocence disappears,
Killing what we think they are and transforming into something more.
Lapping up ambrosia at their feet,
Mapping out where you have been hurt before.
No one can hurt you anymore.
Openly, they are made of light and wings;
Perhaps their many eyes know how you feel,
Questioning the fears you hold inside your stomach and your lungs.
Running water turned holy by their touch,
Sealing any lost faith you may have had,
Turning your fingers to flames as the rest of you burns.
Universes live inside each of them,
Valleys of the rarest galaxies in their eyes.
When will you learn that not everything is beautiful?
Xenial with your hopeless devotion.
You can still run from this poison, this
Zion is all a lie.

About this poem

This poem is an abecedarian poem, so each line starts with the next letter of the alphabet. I wrote this because I love thinking about angels, and how to connect them to humanity. I think that angels are beautiful and comforting, which is why I made this poem the opposite.
