Dad

DAD

You were there when I was born,
Your little rose without the thorn.
You held me in your arms,
Spellbound by my infant charms.
You looked straight into my eyes,
Magically silencing my cries.
I looked up and smiled,
Full of innocence of a child.

Years went by much too quick,
Disappearing as though a magic trick.
My first smile, word, step, song,
Along with the childishness of the very young
Was forbeared and forgiven by you,
Gentle yet firm (frowns.. a few).

Across the space of these short years,
I was taught to overcome most fears.
The stiff upper lip and practicality,
Went hand in hand with responsibility.
This was done with an iron hand,
So that on my feet I can finally stand.

At times I really coun not understand,
The use of harsh words and reprimand.
At first I thought you cruel, and mean,
And thus rebellious I spent my early teens.

Years passed (days it seems),
You taught me about hopes and dreams.
About fragility of the ego and pride,
To face fear head on and not hide.
You taught me to speak my mind,
Yet you told me to respect others and be kind

You were always there for me,
You were the oil on my turbulent sea.
Be it words, love faith or money,
You always made my life sunny.

So this is basically written for you,
My father, my friend.. I love you true.
The unwavering light in my life,
The only meaning in all this trife.
