Family in the Pines

In the cover of the pines
A family walked
Leaving their walls behind
Open air yet warmed
Darkened sky yet still light enough
To see the coppers underfoot
And The greens up high
We walked but an hour
But its memory has lasted a lifetime
I still smell the sap
and the damp winter winds
Coats on our backs
But gloves in our pockets
Touching the giants
We felt so at home
Then the backtrack
Not a sight of squirrels
No bears and no animals
Only their memories on the trill
As we found our car once more
On the same green shore
Have we really won
