If I Close My Eyes

Danielle Brown 1985 (Savannah, GA)

If I close my eyes I can feel you

and if I close them tight enough these pillows next to me feel like the real you

If I close my eyes I can go back to the nights when I was near you

and if I listen real hard I can hear you

telling me you love me....

place no one above me.

If I close my eyes I can fantasize

and if I keep them close I won't realize...

that the love of my life isn't here

and I am living one of my biggest fears.

So for now, keep my eyes closed is what I'll do...
since right now that's the only way I can be with you.

About this poem

I wrote this poem around 2006-2007. At the time the love of my life was separated from me and sent to prison. I wrote this as an expression of love to him but I'm sure others who have suffered loss can relate to it.
