Reflections in Crystal: A Poem on the Umngot River

Mawphniang Napoleon 1993 (Ri Bhoi)

With crystal clarity, Umngot River glides,
A mirror reflecting heaven's bed on high,
Its limpid waters offering a ride
That seems as if in air the boat resides.
The beauty of its clearness is unmatched,
Its depths exposing stones and sands below.
And as the vessel floats, it seems to catch
A glimpse of earth and sky in perfect show.

O how we wish that all our streams could be
As pure and limpid as the Dawki's flow,
That we might bask in nature's majesty,
And witness earth and sky in one great show.
Yet, still the Umngot River stands alone,
A shining gem amidst a darkened stone.

Here in this river, as a mirror bright,
We see a vision of a world made right.
With earth and sky as one, the scene takes flight,
And in its waters, all our troubles fade from sight.
So let us journey to this fair abode,
And bask in nature's grace and beauty showed.

For in its mirrored flow, we see a dream
That has inspired poets for untold years,
And in its crystal depths, we find a stream
That lifts our spirits, calms our doubts and fears.
So let us heed the call of Umngot's tide,
And leave behind a world that's dark and wide.

Like Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud"
Or Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner",
The Umngot River stands as a proud
Example of nature's beauty and power.
So let us journey to this wondrous land,
And bask in its reflection, hand in hand.

Yet, despite its beauty, this river flows
With dangers that we often do not see.
For pollution threatens Umngot's crystal glow,
And greed and waste threaten to set it free.
We must remember that its health and well
Is vital to the balance of our earth,
And that our actions can ensure its swell
Or bring it to a tragic, painful dearth.

So let us be the guardians of this land,
And fight to keep its waters pure and bright,
For in its health, we'll find a shining hand,
That guides us through the dark and endless night.
Let us remember that it is our call,
To save the Umngot River, one and all.

Like Ruskin's "Nature of Gothic" or Thoreau's "Walden",
This river stands as a symbol of all that's true,
A testament to nature's boundless awe,
And the power of its beauty to renew.
So let us hold it close in our hearts,
And pledge to keep its beauty shining bright,
For in this river, a brighter world departs,
And hope and beauty flourish in its light.

About this poem

The poem is about the Umngot River in India and its beauty, which serves as a source of inspiration for poets and a symbol of nature's awe-inspiring power. The river is depicted as a crystal-clear mirror reflecting the sky and offering a peaceful escape from the world's troubles. However, the poem also highlights the dangers that threaten the river's well-being, such as pollution and waste, and the need to protect it. The Umngot River is compared to famous works of literature, such as "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" by Wordsworth and "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Coleridge, and seen as a testament to nature's beauty. The poem concludes with a call to action, urging people to protect the river and keep its beauty shining bright.
