Cheap Candy Hearts

I sat at a small elementary school desk
Dreading the moment that was soon to come
The passing of paper, colored cards was next
Sitting and praying that I’d receive some

One after one they were placed in front of me
From strangers and people I barely knew
But one was different, I couldn’t help but see
A handwritten letter for me from you

In between pinks, reds, and cheap candy hearts
I grabbed the paper from beneath the stack
And cupid began throwing enchanted darts
Lovesickness hit me– a brutal attack

There in that classroom, my life began to change
As I read the words of that plain letter
An immature love began taking the stage–
That Valentine’s day, my life became better

About this poem

This poem explores the conflict between the consumerist culture surrounding Valentine's Day and the simple, youthful ideals that can still be found within the holiday of love.
