Victorian Girl

Nizhi 1993 (USA)

The streets were like any other
manure spread across the cobbles
We canʼt afford a horse, but manure keeps us fed
with the wage of 2 or 4 pennies a head.

My family is large, but not the largest
lost a few who were once there beside us
we arenʼt well off, but not dying either
We don't dare dream when we are so tired

But a few nights ago, I let my mind wander
To the well dressed men who come to barter
and the ladies dressed so splendid and fair
I wonder what itʼs like to live out there.

For the privileged whose privies I clean
For the fat man with a watch who gets paid what I need
For the mans who can afford the pub that keeps us warm
Oh what Iʼd give for that life of lore!

About this poem

I watched a show that took modern people to Victorian England, immersing the person in this time period. Well, I was immersed, and I imagined the life of a young girl in Victorian England.
