The Silences Between Thoughts

Jonathan D. Murray 1985 (Queens, New York)

December 22

I tried
strived to widen
the silences between
these deafening non-stop thoughts
I died
realized it's like rising from a dream
just temporarily
but for a while
I flied

About this poem

A butterfly cinquain that references Zhuangzi's butterfly dream. At times, having an overactive mind feels like a living nightmare. When I practice quieting those thoughts the silence reminds me of death but it also feels like waking up from the nightmare into another life. Like Zhuangzi, in this other life I am free - but only for a while. Eventually I must return to the dream.
