The Conundrum of Silence (for those who stay silent)

Only a fool speaks without thought.
As a person of years and life experience,
experience tells me this much.
Not to mention, the Bible does too.
In Proverbs I think…yes, a wise man holds his tongue.
And I want to be a wise man.
So remain silent, yes.
That must be what this means.

When someone says something you disagree with, remain silent.
It is better this way.
You avoid an argument.
You keep friends.
You don’t look foolish.
People around you who also agree with that issue…they also have no qualms with you,
if you remain silent.

Not to mention,
as professionals, we need to get along.
We need to be friendly.
Speaking out would make work difficult,
would perhaps attract the attention of others…
maybe even a supervisor.
What would happen then?
So it’s best to remain silent.

But now it’s not a disagreement with an issue, but with a moral value.
Should I remain silent?
I fear I should.
Why speak out and risk it?
After all, I am not endorsing the behavior by remaining silent, right?
I’m just doing my own thing.
I know what’s right.
So I’ll remain silent.

But now, it’s an attack on others because of the disagreement.
On others who didn’t stay silent.
I would ask what to do, but I already know the answer.
Remain silent.
Clearly, speaking out does no one good.
Besides…
it’s not up to me.
I am just one person and can’t do much.

But now they attack the truth…and change it (well maybe just try to change it), so they can win the argument which stems from the very disagreement I had with them.
Change it…that’s a laugh.
How can anyone change what’s true?
Actually, I am not sure I am even safe to say what is true out loud.
Then I should definitely remain silent.
Besides, it’s easy now…to remain silent.
I’ve gotten pretty good at it.
Also, I know the truth so what does it matter.
What does it matter if they change it…I mean try to change it…right?
We all know the truth.
No one can really change it.
Best to remain silent.

Now they come after the children.
They target them in their youthful ignorance and tell them that what’s true is not true and what’s not true is true.
I should speak out for them…maybe.
That probably would be a mistake.
Besides, I am kind of accustomed to silence.
Silence seems the right thing to do.
I don’t know enough to speak out, so I should stay silent.
Besides, I have my own children to worry about, and they can’t get to my children, right?

And also,
who’s to say that nothing they say is the truth?
Perhaps they are right…
about some things…
in their perspective of the truth.
So, you know…
Best to just stay silent.
They know what to say
and have lots to say.
I mean, they don’t hold their tongue…
but surely they’re not fools, right?
Besides,
maybe my children can learn something too…
about truth, and morals, and how to be silent
from those who don’t stay silent.
