SYMPTOMS

Desmond Arhin 2022 (Agona Swedru)

A lot they say about me,
Good child, obedient, respectful and all titles I cannot recall
Who else could feel what I feel inside - pain
My timidity, they call it humility
My fearfulness, they see it to be gentleness
In all these, I'm just proud of myself
I've been successfully trained to be truthful, resilient, loving and a good Christian
Yet my feet wobble, my inner voice shakes
The future I fear and my dreams I pursue
I think mom did the most,
My true personality still got a lot to fight against.

About this poem

This poem actually talks about the effects some parental upbringing methods bring on their children. It emphasizes on how African parents socialize their children. Of course no responsible parent can socialize his or her child with negativities. Children in Africa are mostly brought up by good disciplinarians but the truth of the matter is, most of them are left with ‘Fear' as a major disease whose effects begin to show up in their adolescent stage and sometimes adulthood as well. The ‘symptoms' begin showing up when the time comes for them to make an effective decision to better their lives.
