We Have Met The Enemy And It Is Us

Charles Albert Farned 1945 (mississippi)

We Have Met The Enemy And It Is Us

Call out the troops
And gaither in the street
Buy flowers and candy
Be careful whom you greet
How much longer
Can we go without the bread
And do you need my help
To bury all your dead
Don't laugh at nothing
You may miss your only bus
We have met the enemy
And it is us

They say that your philosophy
Is vulgar and is deep
The hill that you are climbing
May be for others much too steep
Bullies and bodyguards
Are treating us so mean
You were always able
To create a funny scene
You thought you knew
Some good people we could trust
We have met the enemy
And it is us

At Father's final warning
We quit the classroom and the stage
And not long after that
We tried acting like our age
No one cares much
For your manners and your looks
And who was it that told you
To keep reading such serious books
Sometimes you must choose
Between love and animal lust
We have met the enemy
And it is us
