I Was Once A Girl.

*I Was Once A Girl.

As I walk down the streets,
The hands of the clock
Strikes a minute after two,
The jingle of bells teases my ears,
Children run home from school,
And I remember that I used to be them,
I was once a girl.

I flocked with a group of friends,
Chatter and laughter in the air,
We skipped along
Downpour of rain, melodies
Unbridled happiness
I was once there,
The innocence of a little girl.

I was once a lady,
Innocence drifted away,
Depression sets in gradually,
The phases of adolescence,
Slammed doors and disappointed gazes, yells of regretful words.

I was once a woman,
Fake smiles at painful moments,
Crossroads and courage,
Responsibility for a family,
Broken hearts to love again,
Wedding rings and church bells,
Ambitious, courageous, flawed,
That flutter from the kick of a kid,
Love oozing from a heart anew,
Staring deep into the eyes of a offspring.

I would never forget I was once a girl,
Nothing compares to that period in time,
When I was most precious to my mother,
And the apple to my father's eye.

Taking a walk down memory lane,
Nostalgia to accompany me
If there was a time machine
Would I travel back to feel that light again?
All the happiness, innocence and freedom,
I couldn't save forever,
Would I grasp them and bring back with me,
To feel everything I felt,
When I was once a girl.

About this poem

I wrote this poem as I was walking home from work one day. It's a nostalgic poem with the poetic persona reminiscing on her old days and how she's grown.
