God Defends the Poor

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

Cold or warm it doesn’t matter,
There still will be hell to pay.
If God can’t see that you’re on fire,
He'll just say: Go away!

Depart from me you evildoers,
Who laugh at all the needy.
You’ve opened wide your wicked mouths
And lifted up the greedy!

Perversion is your native tongue;
Your wicked lips won’t stop.
And once you’ve planted all your seeds,
You raise a wicked crop!

The harvest time has finally come;
The reaper is at your door!
You can’t hold back his wages now;
My God defends the poor!
