Just one

Catrina Fuentes 1981 (United States)

“JUST ONE”
No harm in just one puff,
I won’t get addicted to this stuff.
Next day comes and another won’t hurt.
Soon your breath will struggle when you exert.
a few months later you’re grabbing your chest
Realizing too late you’re in a mess.
Can’t turn back now, you’re slipping away.
I hope you enjoyed the last of your days.
I love you so much it’s part of why I keep going
I try to be healthy to keep on rolling.
Gotta make that money to pay all these bills
So y’all can live good with luxury and frills.
I’ve had nothing and was happy with that.
I only do all this so y’all can have all that
I’ll go back to an old mobile home trailer
if it would extend your life a little later.
You can stay home and do what you please
I’ll keep working to put your life at ease,
I’ll sell everything and get out of debt
to make more memories that I won’t ever forget
I’d do anything for you because I love you that much
I don’t feel it’s the same because we barely even touch
I live with all these doubts and insecurities
Despite all the words you try to say to me
When you try to ease my frame of mind
I don’t believe you and I think you’re lying.
I feel you’re hiding way more than you should.
I wish you would speak up, it’s time I understood
Just trust me and tell me what is wrong
why light back up after quitting for so long
I may get upset but my love for you is real
it would bring us closer to know how you feel.

About this poem

My husband has heart issues, quit smoking 7.5 months and started back. Doesn’t talk about his feelings.
