When Autumn Arrives
Shreeparna Kar 2001 (Orissa)
When Autumn Arrives, I shall seek you. Donned in a gray trench, inundated by your presence.
You'd run through my mind, longer than the nights of dark hues.
For though you would be a moment, My heart will run bleak, my mind in quiescence.
Just like the sallow leaves, I'd wither and fall.
And just like the cold katabatic, you'd embrace it all.
Then one fall night, you'd change. Like the leaves do from yellow to cantaloupe.
Here my heart would turn bold, my mind so strange.
But the nights of morbid air would not deter my hope.
When nights grow longer, I shall weep through the day.
But you would be a beacon in my heart, When the lights fade away.
As the leaves turn russet, fall will fade.
And with it, all emotions that the season trades.
To you though I shall hold on to Like a scarf on an autumn eve.
And when the days turn gleam, I will still believe.
I would find you every fall,
Just Like the subtle autumn breeze, Whenever autumn arrives I shall seek you, you who would put my mind and heart at ease.
About this poem
The poem talks about autumn and how the season co-relates with the human emotions of anticipation, fear ,distress and at the same time hope ,courage and love. The poem in its very essence conveys to its readers that just like the fall season that goes through a series of seasonal changes before winter arrives, the human emotions are dynamic too and keep changing over time. Somedays they provide warmth and composure but on some days they are cold and morbid thus highlighting the very theme of fall and its co-relation with the poetic verses. All in all the poem talks about how every human emotion should be embraced and cherished over time just like the season autumn which is embraced ,cherished and celebrated by one and all over time. more »
