The Haunted House

The Haunted House

By Jade Lof

On the 31st it is Halloween,
And all the children are oh so keen!

They run dashing house to house,
But on the last one, they are as quiet as a mouse.

It is a spooky house stretching far and wide,
And nothing can get their fears to subside.

The oldest child runs to knock,
But to his surprise, the door is unlocked!

They huddle up and ponder,
Then decide to go in and wander.

It’s candy they seek,
So they must take a peek!

The youngest child finds some candy,
But soon realizes all is not dandy.

A trapdoor opens revealing stairs,
And all the children tumble down in pairs.

The children get up, bruised and slow,
Their chances of escaping are pretty low.

Cobwebs stretch as far as they can see,
But they spot a sign that says “Find The Key”.

The children notice a locked door,
And suddenly don’t feel so poor!

They scurry up and around,
Studying the walls and searching the ground.

Finally they find the key,
But it’s broken, cracked and super dusty!

One of the kids spots some goo on the wall,
But it’s high up near the ceiling and no one’s that tall.

It’s time to improvise!
The children start to rise!

Balancing on each others’ shoulders and hands,
The kids can easily reach the goo strands!

In the end, the key is as good as new!
The older kids start to rejoice, and the little ones too!

All the children sprint to the door,
Then shove the key right in its core.

The door opens with a soft little click,
And there is so much candy, they don’t know which to pick!

In the end, the kids went home in glory,
Even though not one parent would believe their story!
