My Hair

Drama! Drama! Drama!
This is my hair not my mama's!
Hundreds of years the world tried to dictate to us me
How it must be
Secretly envying me us
From our plaits to our cornrows
However our hair grows and goes
They called it a 10 when Bo wore them
Not caring for us it wasn't a whimsical momentary change
A lifetime of who I we were meant to be
Drama! Drama! Drama!
Our tight curls,waves, dreads,and braids
being misunderstood
Made to conform in order to be found beautiful and the norm
Denied the right to simply exist
Unlike Samson our hair is only a part of our strength
Drama! Drama! Drama!
There stands society
Clutching their pearls
Fearing the unknown ready to cast a stone
They thought we were menacing and dangerous
because of our hair
DRAMA!
Long, short, blowing free,
Tightly woven to our scalp let us be
We're not the ones who have lice
We use too much heat
We I just want to be me
As long as there's no penalty
Afros expanding to the globe of our heads
Our natural brand
No matter what color
Just sporting our God-given Glory
Not our fault yours don't have any body
It can be a throwback to DNA
No threat just us
Sporting our hair however the feeling leads us
Even if it's bald
Leave us and let it be
So save all the drama for your momma
Or whomever the hair police may be
I'm just going to unapologetically let my our hair be
Beautifully me
