First chapati is Mine

Adnan Gujjar 1989 (Mandi Bhauddin)

Recalling the sizzling sound
Sitting around the stove
Fighting over close to heat
Goddess among fairies
Baking and sharing the sweet.
Oily heads in blue rob
The smell of ink and clay
Flowing nose, greasy napkin
Among many aching kins.
Awesome,
Heart-wrenching early in the morning
Warning over warning
I am not to go today
I went yesterday.
Excuses!
Headache
Leg ache
Untimely fever and fret
Innocent threat.
Tinny grieves:
My cycle is not well
The fear of school bell
Rod of teacher
Upon small creature
And the Assembly
Fearful company
Searching tutors
Ours is not here today!
What a festivity
No activity.
Ah!
Goddess of the glee
The key
Baking after baking
Treating and caring
Don't do that
Redress your hat.
Eying at crew
These a few
We're the whole universe
And sudden sound
Everything is fine, but
The first chapatti is Mine
First Chapatti is Mine.

About this poem

The poem is nostalgic. it recalls the memories of a boy who lives in typical Punjabi culture in Pakistan. It is emotional and vibrant. it recalls the memories of childhood school days and the list of ridiculously lame excuses.
