WAR: The Meal of Agony

Nduka Abel 1988 (Abia State)

The dinning table set for supper;
sumptuous meals oozing aroma of agony.
Guns and knives ready to eat the meals,
Prepared by hatred and ethnicity.
The dinning table set for supper.

War the glory of the weak and simple;
Oh! They're  fanning the ember, oiling the woods;
Cutting the thin line that holds us.
The dinning table set for supper.

They're done with  the meals;
Mothers in lonely roads searching for sucklings.
Ah! My family is no more, cried a father.
O Look at the weary sucklings helpless!
The dinning table set for supper.

Supper served and eaten;
Pioneers shaking hands and merrying,
Haha! No victor no vanquish, they say.
The dinning table set for supper.

About this poem

This poem is about the aftermath of war. Currently in the world people tend to incite others to go to war or start things that are likely to lead to war through pointing to them how they are different from other because of their tribe, race and ethnicity, rather than how they are the same as human beings. We are used to this saying 'No Victor no vanquish' after any war. The question is what happene to those who lost their property and lives? It is important that we avoid anything avoidable that is likely lead to war, loss of lives and property.
