The Loneliness

I can feel the loneliness. It sinks into my pores
   and creeps under my skin.
It lingers in my mind filling me with thoughts
   of sadness and longing.
It burns my eyes: tears, hot and running in
   rivulets down my cheeks.
It fills my mouth-sand so dry that no amount
of water can quench my thirst.
It smells…burning flesh that’s bitter, distasteful
   and sickens my senses.
It hurts my ears: cannon fire; sirens; the sound
   of thunder above my head.
It fills my soul like crashing waves against the
rocks; a tsunami of infinite proportions.
It breaks my heart into tiny pieces like shards
of glass, glittering as they fall.
And all I can feel is the loneliness.

About this poem

I wrote this to mirror the feelings of my own and others’ so that all who read it can relate, and not feel like they are the only ones who are seemingly alone or abandoned.

The darkest thoughts have always brought out the most feelings. For me, they are a celebration of all that is buried below the surface. more…
