MODERN LIBATION

MODERN LIBATION

We have poured
more wine
than the gods can drink.
Sour wine
that bites their taste
to curse our fate.

We have sprinkled
more yam
than the gods can eat.
Rotten yam
gleaned from foreign lands
to spite our land.

We have spoken
more words
than the gods can hear.
Idle words
from twisted tongues in hazy heads
revealing hollow hearts.

Emmanuel Osuman (2016)

About this poem

I wrote this poem because I am appalled that my African leaders still believe that they can get the help of the gods to cause them to win and retain power even against the wishes of the electorate. They seem not to know that spirits do not vote.
