FAULT

Vanshita Sharma 2007 (Chandigarh)

Am I at fault, if men rape me for their pleasure,
If I can’t keep up with the social measure.
Am I at fault if I don’t get an equal pay at job,
If every other day society makes me sob.
Am I at fault if I was born not as a son but a daughter,
And everyday society comes at me to slaughter!
For I did not opt for the appropriate length;
For I showed the world my strength;
For I came home late,
And not by eight.
This so - called society leaves no chance,
Every time it makes me go in trance.
Yes I am at fault, if I don’t abide
And try to stand for my pride.

About this poem

I would like students from all across to read my poem and understand that life is still not easy for every girl living in this society, that there still are many girls who are not fortunate enough to live their life freely.
