Daughter of my Mother
Olotu Olushina Timothy 1979 (Lagos)
Rise again My damsel!
Downcast angel of our planet,
Chaste in the unchaste hands of men;
Who shatter your tender heart,
As they stray, breaking the covenant;
While you stay, making it stand;
O daughter of my mother!
Indeed be praised, daughter!
Our homes are made by your hands,
And the service of your heart;
O frail vessel of our quarters:
But the boo-boo of religion
Deny your place in our world,
O daughter of my mother!
Raise your head of beauty!
Suffered in a world against you,
Battered by men so fitful,
By strange tradition abused,
Raped by rods of cowardice;
Of men strong only against you,
O daughter of my Mother!
Be honoured, dear lady!
Spangled with gentle sparkle,
Of real celestial beauty,
Endowed with love that bleeds,
Of cruel men’s treachery:
They sought to show their muscle,
By weakness against you;
O daughter of my mother!
Hold the line Untrodden!
Daughter of my mother;
Born of the womb that born me,
Washed by the water that washed me:
Take your place beside me,
Building a world for you and me,
O daughter of my mother!
Stay with me on the board!
Together we own the world:
Never a stranger to our Joy,
Never bound to be soiled;
Freely reign abreast with me,
Position to bear the world,
O daughter of my mother!
About this poem
I wrote this poem when I saw the heart-pains of a lot of good women being abused and taken for granted; my late mother being one of them. It is an encouragement to the women; and also an admonition to the men to respect women just as they want to be respected.
