"A"braham
Yabous Kanaan 1997 (Jerusalem)
““A” BRAHAM”.
They say my eloquence
departed thyself
on the day “A”braham
shredded the seven dykes open!
Ibrahim, the roots of my uprooted
And exiled shrikes
Erasing the “I”, I stressed and long
Have scarred on olive trees
My ancestors have defined
With a brown soil and swaying waste
I reckon to be mine!
Dethroning my “I”, with an “A”
Unveiled to the western wind
Where no eagles might be found
To compass my unsteady steps
Or monitor my shaky strings
As I utter out the puzzles of a lost life
Needling within
Hence death inhaling what I bear
Of “I”, and what I bear of the light
I once stolen in the name of a “life”
From the slaughter “I”brahim has laid me on
Under the pine trees and wet grass
-My vision of my final gate and final goodbyes-
Reciting the revelations of last night:
“Oh, son of my own flesh
And son of my brown blood
Brown from the soil I, Ibrahim
Has emerged from and immersed within
To slaughter the love drowning my lungs
Enough to soften a heart
I long have disciplined to sail amongst the stars
Way above what its of you and I
This love must die!
If it to blind my sight of what I see and
Touch in the catches of the dark
This love I bear must be laid
To the earths it belongs!
To the earths it sprouts and feed of
To the warmth you’ve wrapped my limbs with
a bite meant only to scratch
oh, but ripped a piece you
grasp proudly, strutting in the streets
as your own birthmark
Where your eagles reside!
On the tip of your umbilical cord
Where life has blown itself
And life shall depart!
Sun, of my earthly skies
Your flames have flooded my blind spots
I fear its straying me off the logic
I long have weaved
Under the trees you were born
Leading me home
where no pulses may escape
sinking into a consciousness
I conceal, and I turn my cheek off
Sun of my eyes, may I sell you this eve
And buy the comfort of what I have weaved
Under the mighty oak trees
I must shed the warmth
Our hearts and fingertips shelter beneath
To divide the illusions of duality
Off my muddied skin
And retain the One
Where stillness lays its peace
So near to the zero of nothingness
Where pulses won’t tire my sleeps”
Oh, “I”brahim of mine!
You took the pungent straight to your own heart
Leaving the warmth of you and I
Loudly alive on the slaughter of
Your own beating heart!
“I”brahim of mine
How’s the peace of zero up in the clouds?
For this earth where my cursed warmth occupies
Still Flames and writhe the lands I walk upon
“I”brahim of mine
Have the divinely sun washed your sight
From the blind spots our love has falsely implant?
“I”brahim, father of my roots
Why are my vocals failing me down?
I no longer can hear the “I”
spluttering from my throat
Only an orphaned “a”
Sailing my boats to oceans
I know not!
An orphaned “a”
Icing the fires I carry and tame,
The duality of my own name!
An orphaned “a”
Butchering the tension of the “I”
With no warning signs
Lulling revelations of a new dawn
The freedom of “I”brahim’s alter
That I want not!
“I”brahim, how’s the utter detachment?
From all the seeds you’ve sprung in me
From all the roots you’ve sweat and
Sown in this barren warring land
Jerusalem of ours!
“I”brahim, I sit under the mighty oak trees
Smell the pine needles from underneath
Flip the petals of narcissuses in my hands
Counting what I may not count
Counting your strayed looks
Off the innocence of youth and innocence of life
Where breaths heaved and breaths nestled
Within layers I wished to sink in too!
“I”brahim, I sit and waste the narcissus petals
You left in my backyard, and empty hands
In alters, I swear in the name of your own stars
And not mine!
That smells of plastic, and smells of the chaos
Of twos, way afar from the One
I know, I carry inside!
“I”brahim, the nights are getting longer
And no rocks are here to tame my demons down
“I”brahim, one day I’ll lose this fight
And the winds of time and oblivion
Shall weep the volcanos in my soul
And bleed the knot in my throat, the “I”
Back to the metamorphosis of One
Where I shall kneel and wish on the Sun
You’ve always wished upon
To tame the hurricanes, you whirled histories with
shredding my chest open to a million hundred defeats!
“A”braham of the zero of my life!
“A”braham will I be able to set you free?
From the heat I’ve long bound us in!
In tales, where man still do not apprehend nor understand
“A”braham will I ever break the curse of the sheep and wolf?
Long glorifying and long manifesting on the verges of my life!
“A”braham, my birthmark still stains children of mine!
“A”braham they’re washing the alter
From my heated blood
Wait, I am still laying down!
About this poem
I wrote this one month after losing my grandfather: "ibrahim". I woke up in the middle of the night and words instead of tears came out...
