Life Amidst the Groaning of a State

She still longs for the bed
For its appeal had not lasted long

Then running along to the vessels of water
Thinking: across to land only seconds time

Dazed, gazing all over, seeing nothing
And tirelessly trotting to her next option and only

Where there were many a million people
Some merely sweating and standing, others crying and climbing

With the elbow as a weapon, freeing her sides
Her voice a sharp instrument, pushing her way forward

And others doing quite the same
Some ferociously, others more calmly

On getting down, hours away from soon
After the day's toil, it was time to return

From one motion object to another
From boots to buses and jumping windows

And then to the last bus stop
And finally to the bed of consolation

And the next day, the cycle continues
As Life Amidst the Groaning of a State - LAGOS.

About this poem

Often called the Los Angeles of Nigeria, Lagos is a southwestern Nigerian city. Though newcomers may find the city exciting the poetic persona's plights as a typical Lagosian commuter is vividly illustrated in this fast-paced poem
