twas the day after christmas...by mary trumble:)...copyright 2010

Mary Trumble 1965 (San Mateo .CA)

twas the day after christmas
and all through my rental
not a creature could move
not even the psycho-cat...mental

all the stockings had been emptied
every last treat had been eaten
the next person who offers me a cookie
is gonna get beaten

i pried open my eyes
to survey my humble abode
what i saw was the cat
looking ready to explode

he was licking his chops
he looked so darned perky
i started to laugh
then thought...oh god...the turkey

i ran for the kitchen
as fast as i could crawl
he'd eaten every last piece
he'd eaten it all

i saw the trail of bones
that led straight for my bed
as visions of huge vet bills
swam through my head

i plopped down in my chair
and thought oh this is it
he's off to the shelter
and it won't bother me one bit

but as i sat there and remembered
all the good times we'd had
i knew i couldn't do it
and said he's not so bad

though he's poked holes in my screens
and ruined my italian leather couch
i still can't help but love
the hairy ol' grouch

so i say this to all
who are owned by cats just like mine
dogs might be cool
but cats are divine

About this poem
