open invitation

i think of you
in tempo
in rhythm
and stride

confusing complexity;

in the daylight
i’ll shine
like the sun

in the night
like the moon
i will hide

and the hours
will go by
as minutes

and the days
won’t begin as soon

time is
just an illusion

and to reality
i am immune

stroll through my mind
make sense of the confusion

look around
untangle all
the traumatic wires

but leave the knots
that keep me inspired

drift through
art and glory

as you study
my imagination

you’ll find yourself painted
in detailed illustrations;

the only art in my mind
that you will see in color

you’ll finally see how
the shades in my mind
are substantially duller

i knew how to love
i just forgot how

because everyone
i ever loved
i mean nothing to now

my guards are up
but not at
a ninety degree angle

make sure you know
exactly which wires
you need to untangle

fascinating but risky -

what could i lose
if i’ve always felt blue?

hand me a whiskey
and let me open up to you.

Zahara

born in Kuwait and raised in Vancouver, BC, i have always felt like a misfit. not being traditional enough in correlation to my Arab background, and not open minded enough for Western culture. dealing with anxiety, ADHD, depression, conversion disorder and epilepsy in a culture that does not believe in the conception of mental health whilst trying to find myself and my purpose; i have documented all my emotions into a series of short poems that touch on love, loss and mental health - three components that cannot coexist without one another. my poetry is untraditional, new and simple, with one agenda - to make you feel something. the purpose is to make readers feel more connected and less alone by allowing themselves to feel and express their emotions through my words when they have nobody to trust. i hope you feel something. more…
