My Melancholy Mara

Boredom pierced her eyes
Her eyes were almost as green as the veins splaying the length of neck
If I’d hadn’t seen her face, I would’ve thought she was angry
Mara doesn’t get angry
That’s far too much effort
Put a price on happiness and she wouldn’t pay

Days listening to music
Eyes to the ceiling,
Not looking at me,
Never looking at me
I wonder what goes on in her head
Does she dream about me?
Does she dream of me like I do, her?
The phone starts up
Her ringtone is Queen
She stands up for the first time in hours,
Sulks to the edge of the coffee table
She’s still so close I can hear the click clack of her bare feet on hardwood floors
She ends the call with her landlord and sighs
Heavily sighs, like she is just oh-so frustrated that the landlord has called to nicely ask for her rent
She comes closer to me and I can smell her now
The smell of day old clothes and body odor swarm my nose

Then, she looks at me
For the first time in the days i’ve spent here,
she looks at me
And I smile
I can’t help it
And she screams
I leap through the screen of the window
Push her up against the coffee table
Her phone sings the lyrics to Love of My Life
‘Oh my melancholy Mara, you’ll never be sad again’
