If inspiration broke my heart

Greetings dear inspiration,

Where do you hail from today?

The trees in my soon-to-be green park?
Or from across the deep dark ocean with abundant sharks?

Or can I find you in the little places?

Dust gathered on my guitar,
the strong smell of vanilla from my sister’s cookie jar
I try to seek you but I don’t find you in the clichéd places like my lover’s car
I guess you’re my truest love because I never want you to hide anywhere too far
Today it rained and all my doubts found a finish
because I knew your arrival was due any minute
I waited and waited for you to appear
but surely you had plans to greet a distant pen peer
They say you only meet the unfortunate to give them some glory,
well, in that case, agony is the protagonist of my story

I’ll tell you what I’ve gathered about you from all our occasional dalliances-

I know you’re a melodious nomad, uncertainty your consistent chime
I know this fickleness affected many, but I hope I was your most memorable crime
Let me tell you a secret, I named you Jane
Because your advent is always abetted by pain
You make me drown in all my emotions and find the shipwrecked gold
After that, you leave me breathless and wanting more
I don’t understand you and now I’ve stopped trying to
Thank you for all you’ve done but I’m done waiting for you.

About this poem

As writers, we've all experienced how frustrating it is to find inspiration for our work. I wrote this poem re-imagining inspiration as a person or thing I could find easily before but not anymore. And now that it has broken my heart, I've moved on from always searching for it.
