HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY?

Mohona Dutta 1981 (Assam)

There it goes fluttering in the wind
Tattered and weathered down
The colors still remain vibrant
There's another one floating in the neighbor's drain
Maybe a reminiscent of a glorious celebration
Underneath the black muck
Ì see them lying around like corpses
Dead with an unprecedented plague
The kid at the traffic signal is making planes now
His flight of fantasy is colorful
And his grin is that of innocence
The last one I saw was unceremoniously packed in the dustbin bag
Hushed voices and averted eyes
Just like the ones ready to bury a crime
It peeked from a torn corner with a cheeky smile perhaps,
A faint reminder of its magnificent past
The colors still remained vibrant
Saffron, white and green.
