I have things to do

The wall clock struck twelve times
As I lay in my bed
But sleep hasn’t come
A sigh rolls out of my lips
Where are you, Sleep?
Where can I find you?

I shift  and my bed creaks
Is it telling me to lay still?
Like Mother used to say “Sit Still, will you?” at Church
Or was it my old bones creaking?

My heart is still in springtime
Green and excitable for little things
But my hair turned white I don’t know when
Had it been my choice
I’d have kept it long ink black
bouncy whenever I ran

Had it been my choice,
I’d have stayed young and enjoyed having silly thoughts
What is my choice in this life?
Still, I ask the Almighty to give me another chance
Because I have things to do
I had asked the same prayer long ago
But where had those years gone by?

This time,
Grant me slow-flowing years
Almighty One in Heaven
Not like the years that moved so fast like streams
So that I know what I’m doing
And I have things to do.

The End

About this poem

As I aged I long for the days I've been young and worry-free.
