The musings of an idiot

How long must I suffer?
How long must I wait for love?

Must the universe my heart so tug?

With malice in her heart she slices my soul.
She waves her logical power in my face and tortures me with hope.

"But no more. No more" I say.
As I follow her into the abyss.

Because try as I might, and mightily have I tried.
The universe always unveils her
Ugly side.

Simply not to hope.
Simply not to dream.
But how can one abandon hope, without simply hoping not to be.

Such a burden I cannot bear.
To disillusioned be.

So pour me another ale!
And sorrow let me be!

For tonight I hope once more,
And pessimism do I deny.

As in melancholy will I tomorrow wake.
And in her arms will I lie.

About this poem

This poem comes from a few existential thoughts that I've been pondering lately. Who are we? Why are we here? I found that pain doesn't ever get better, and that we always have a choice. As the existentialists say we must "choose our misery" not meaning that we have to be miserable. Just that we have the option of illusion or disillusion. In this case the person who is experiencing these feelings doesn't want to hope for love as this will illusion him. But he indulges at some point and thereafter reverts back to a melancholic pain after the "high". I hope the poem was able to bring this across effectively. Thank you for reading!
