Living a lie

The world is man
So you’ll have to hide
People are watching
Even when you live in the dark
Try not to fall, adjust to this setting

I want to see the world
And outside the walls
Do not say such things
And learn to cook instead
You’re an object to the man, for the world is his

It is time to be sold
Show us you’re worthy
And find a man
Work day and night
And then prove your fertility

I listened
Day to day, I obeyed
I passed it on to my children
The world is man
And you’ll have to learn

They were resilient, stubborn
I tried till I lost my balance
We were being watched
By eyes unknown
I lost my grip and one slipped away

Out the window
And into the skies with the birds
Where she always said she belonged
I kept her in a coffin, killed her curiosity
But it wasn’t enough

I am woman
The world isn’t mine
So I was taught and so I believed
I adjusted till I started to bend
Will it always be like this?

I looked into the skies and she was gone
Shattering the flower vase
Just like my life
A life that wasn’t mine
A life that is a lie.
