my body

Zezetu Mqondiso 2003 (Cape Town)

my body is a canvas
my body is a work of art

the stretch marks
the uneven toning
the love handles

i won't be told to cover it up
i won't be told i can't show it off
i won't be told it's inappropriate to show it off

this is my body
this is my canvas
this is my territory

and what i say goes
you. don't. have. a. say.

About this poem

i wrote this poem at a time where i had recently been bullied for the way my body is and the fact that i wear whatever i want and feel comfortable wearing but sadly my body is not exactly conforming to societal norms hence the backlash i received and so i wrote this poem as a pick-me-up because i really needed a reminder that this body is mine and i can't do anything else but love it.

Yes, I am a very confident being with tons of self-esteem but rest assured, i am not arrogant. If anything, I am a lovely person who has love for those around her more…
