Love of Our Souls

Russll Rutherford 1950 (Denver Co..)

Our children are the light of our lives,
The love of our souls.
They are the hopes and the dreams
of what we want this world to be.
From the moment they are born,
They become the light of our lives.
And when that light is suddenly extinguished,
We are left to question why.
But we know that the light that shone so brightly
Here on this world
Will join and add to the light in Heaven forevermore.
To us, the ones who are left to carry on,
We can only hope and pray
That the darkness that has invaded our souls
Can be illuminated once again with time.
Knowing all too well
That a part of us will never be the same.

About this poem

I wrote this poem after the shootings at Columbine. It helped me to deal with the tragedy easier.
