Heroes of Men are Working Men
THE HEROES OF MEN ARE WORKING MEN
It’s how you click the refresh button of each day that marvels me,
You fall with every nightfall and rise with every daybreak.
Your wave to me every morning from the car window,
Is an admonition that my bowl will be full by evening.
The hug you give when you leave me to stride down my school gate
The kisses of joy you plant on my cheeks and forehead
They turn rivers I and my friends swim in every day
This is why I always come home with my uniform messy
Daddy, yesterday you came home with your neckties overstretched
You went to your bed and didn’t say good night to Polo and me
Polo howled all night, while I watched the clock tick off its loneliness
Crotched close to the edge of your bed, I heard your little snores
The cleansing and formatting you do every night before a busy day
It’s 4:30 am this morning, you are up again, you look at your Oracle
The little God hung on your wall pinpoints out the actions of your life
A dedicated knight to his job, humble to his tools and family
Tonight mum will cook your favourite, a workman’s gain will feed his belly
You are a warrior, you’ve conquered the war-torn zone of hunger
Your providence attack the weaponry of devious worms
Your mechanization usurped poverty from its fortress
Daddy, you are a hero despite no formal contest, you won for your children
